Class 1 – May 6th

Hi everyone, welcome to the first urban agriculture certificate course from CultivAction Solidarity Cooperative. Erik Chevrier, Ph.D. and Mohammed Al-Duais will be your instructors for the course.

We will meet at the farm at Loyola Campus. The Loyola Farm is located at the back of Concordia University, Loyola Campus – TB building. 7079 Rue de Terrebonne, Montreal, Quebec H4B 1E1.

Class Content

In our first session, participants will be introduced to the garden space, establish expectations for working together, explore basic gardening practices, and begin planning the garden design collaboratively.

Schedule:

  1. Welcome & Icebreaker
       – Introduction to the program and a “get-to-know-you” activity

  2. Setting Expectations
       – Group discussion on roles, responsibilities, and community agreements for managing the garden

  3. Gardening Basics
       – Overview of cultivation, transplanting, plant support, and optimizing the garden site

  4. Hands-on Farm Work
       – Potting up seedlings
       – Removing weeds

  5. Collaborative Garden Design
       – Group discussion and brainstorming session

  6. Garden Design Presentations
       – Each group shares their design ideas with the class
