Hi everyone, welcome to the 7th session of the Urban Agriculture Certificate course from CultivAction Solidarity Cooperative. This week, Erik Chevrier, Ph.D., and Mohammed Al-Duais will guide you through the theme “Integrated Pest Management and Natural Solutions: Addressing Common Garden Challenges through Ecological Methods.”We’ll explore practical, sustainable strategies to manage pests and maintain healthy garden ecosystems without relying on synthetic chemicals.

We will meet at the farm at Loyola Campus.
The Loyola Farm is located at the back of Concordia University, Loyola Campus – TB building. 7079 Rue de Terrebonne, Montreal, Quebec H4B 1E1.
In this session, we will explore ecological strategies for managing pests and addressing common garden challenges. The focus will be on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and natural, non-chemical solutions that support healthy garden ecosystems. Participants will engage in both indoor and outdoor activities, including insect identification, hands-on problem-solving, and collective garden work.
Schedule:
1 – Meet at Loyola Farm – Arrive and gather at the farm for a brief orientation.
2 – Introduction and Check-In – Overview of the day’s topic and goals – Group check-in about readings (presentations if anyone is ready and interested)
3 – Breakout Sessions – Group 1: “Get to Know Common Garden/Farm Insects” with Erik (classroom) – Group 2: “Solving Garden/Farm Problems” with Mohammed (garden)
4 – Group Switch – Groups rotate to experience the other session
5 – Work on Collective Plots – Discuss ways of applying IPM strategies, observe garden conditions, and collaborate on ongoing plot maintenance
