Class Content

In this third session, participants will be introduced to soil as a living system that supports regenerative food production in urban gardens and farms. We will explore soil structure and function, including microorganisms, composting processes, and the soil food web. Participants will also learn how regenerative soil practices can be applied in home gardening to improve plant health, resilience, and productivity.

Schedule:

Welcome & Check-in

– Introduction to the session and a brief group check-in

Soil & Regenerative Agriculture

– Presentation and guided discussion on soil properties, soil health, and regenerative food systems
– Introduction to soil structure, microorganisms, composting, and the soil food web
– Connecting soil health to urban gardening practices

Soil Sensing Activity

– Hands-on exploration of soil texture, structure, moisture, and biological activity
– Guided observation and sensory engagement with soil in the garden space

Hands-on Garden Work

– Planting peppers and eggplants
– Seeding garden beds
– Applying soil-focused regenerative practices in real garden conditions

Questions, Concerns, Comments?
