In this sixth session, participants will be introduced to the ecology and management of perennial garden systems. We will explore the unique growth habits and maintenance requirements of perennial plants, examine how these species contribute to resilient and biodiverse agroecosystems, and learn how succession planting can extend harvests throughout the growing season.

Welcome & Check-in

– Introduction to the session and a brief group check-in
– Discussion on participants’ gardens, observations since the previous class, and seasonal progress

Introduction to Plant Ecology: Maintaining Perennial Garden Systems

– Guided tour of the perennial garden spaces
– Introduction to the growth habits and ecological functions of perennial plants
– Discussion of seasonal maintenance practices, including pruning, weeding, watering, and long-term care for healthy perennial plant communities

Succession Planting

– Presentation and discussion on succession planting as a strategy for continuous harvests throughout the growing season
– Direct seeding of appropriate crops by hand and with a mechanical seeder
– Exploring crop timing, planting intervals, and seasonal planning for productive gardens

New Plant Propagation

– Seeding trays for future transplanting into the garden
– Discussion of seedling care and planning for future garden successions
