place where participants can learn and have important group conversations about issues with the global food system and tangible solutions. <\/p><p>Erik Chevrier, Ph.D., will guide group conversations with participants interested in critical perspectives in food studies. The group will meet biweekly between in May and August. Fortunately, there are many examples of how to build food sovereign communities. This reading group will explore issues related to the food system including:<\/p><p><strong>Food insecurity<\/strong> \u2013 there are over 800 million people starving in the world today!<\/p><p><strong>Lack of food sovereignty<\/strong> \u2013 peasants and farmers are being affected by trade agreements and food dumping!<\/p><p><strong>Genetic modification process and health<\/strong> \u2013 epigenetics matter!<\/p><p><strong>Use of chemical herbicides<\/strong> \u2013 glyphosates are being identified as cancer causing! <\/p><p><strong>Privatization<\/strong> \u2013 restricted access to seeds, land and equipment!<\/p><p><strong>Cost on farmers<\/strong> \u2013 family farms are not viable!<\/p><p><strong>Cost on farm workers<\/strong> \u2013 farmers are often exploited, especially migrant labourers!<\/p><p><strong>Reduction of biodiversity<\/strong> \u2013 we are destroying nature! <\/p><p><strong>Unwanted genetics spreading onto non-GMO farms<\/strong> \u2013 farmers face lawsuits!<\/p><p><strong>Loss of Indigenous farming methods<\/strong> \u2013 on stolen land!<\/p><p><strong>Loss of soil arability<\/strong> \u2013 we are killing our soil!<\/p><p><strong>Chemical pesticides are killing pollinators<\/strong> \u2013 fruits need bees!<\/p><p><strong>We are producing too much synthetic nitrogen and phosphorus<\/strong> &#8211; our waters are developing \u2018dead zones\u2019!<\/p><p><strong>Corporate concentration of agribusinesses<\/strong> \u2013 former war chemical companies are now food and seed companies! <\/p><p><strong>Health<\/strong> \u2013 our food contains toxins!<\/p><p><strong>Foundations on structural racism, colonialism and patriarchy<\/strong> \u2013 glaring systemic issues!<\/p><p><strong>Rising cost of seed and chemicals<\/strong> \u2013 we don\u2019t need to buy seeds!<\/p><p><strong>Research funding being directed to GMOs instead of traditional breeding methods<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018science\u2019 is not only about GMOs!<\/p><p><strong>Pest and weed resistance<\/strong> to Bt crops and glyphosate!<\/p><p><strong>Agriculture is a significant contributor to GHG production<\/strong> &#8211; agroecology can help sequester carbons instead!<\/p><p>Fortunately, here are ways to address these issues through food sovereignty and food justice frameworks. He enables his students to learn by doing and empowers them to become community leaders, urban farmers, and sustainability activists. With a strong interest in the political economy of ethical food systems, Erik has meticulously chronicled Concordia\u2019s student-run food cooperatives through his PhD in Humanities.
