Urban Agriculture Certificate - Loyola Campus

La CultivAction Urban Agriculture Certificate Program is designed for intermediate gardeners, urban farmers, and past participants of the Urban Agriculture Course. Through biweekly lessons, this program expands participants’ knowledge of urban gardening, farming, permaculture, and agroecology.

In addition to structured learning, participants will co-manage a shared farm space, performing weekly gardening tasks on their own schedule and take home the fruits of their labour. This hands-on experience, combined with expert-led lessons and engaging learning material, equips students with the skills and critical understanding needed to actively contribute to resilient urban food systems.

Pourquoi l'agriculture urbaine est-elle importante ?

Agriculture is one of the leading sources of global pollution, industrial farming is destroying our biosphere and chemical pesticides and fertilizers have negative effects on our health. Buying locally grown food is a great way to minimize your environmental impact, and learning to grow your own food is even better!

Food prices are on the rise; a study from Dalhousie University, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Guelph, and the University of British Columbia found that food prices increased by 10.3% in 2022.

Rising costs are influenced by various factors, including tariffs on imported goods and supply chain disruptions, which make locally grown food even more valuable. Growing your own food is a rewarding way to reduce your carbon footprint, save money, and learn practical skills that you can share with others while also supporting local food security.

Whatever your motivation, with a little bit of knowledge and practice, it is possible to grow an abundance of healthy fruits and vegetables and participate in a movement to cultivate a more resilient and food secure future.

A propos du cours

The Urban Agriculture Certificate Program offers biweekly classes throughout the growing season, from May to October. Over 12 sessions, participants will receive advanced training in urban agriculture, building on existing gardening knowledge and enhancing practical skills.
This program is designed for intermediate gardeners and urban farmers who already have experience with basic gardening practices and are looking to deepen their understanding of urban agroecology. Whether you’re looking to transform your property into an edible garden, manage a community garden, or grow food in an urban setting, this program will equip you with the knowledge and tools to expand your farming practice.

A unique and hands-on aspect of this program is the opportunity for students to co-manage a portion of the Loyola Farm space. Students will form small groups and collaboratively develop a schedule to manage farm tasks outside of class time. Students can invest as much or as little time as they’re able to, ensuring flexibility to fit their schedules. At the beginning of the course, groups will discuss and agree on the necessary tasks to accomplish between lessons, from planting and weeding to maintaining the infrastructure. This cooperative approach fosters teamwork, encourages hands-on learning, and provides a fun and engaging way to immerse yourself in urban farming.

As part of the immersive experience, students will harvest fresh produce from their shared farm space as it ripens and take home weekly baskets filled with their harvest, allowing them to directly apply their learning and enjoy the fruits of their labour. This ongoing connection between classroom instruction and real-world practice provides a comprehensive, practical, and enjoyable way to learn about urban agroecology
